Why Do Prayer Times Differ Between Apps and Mosques?
Apps and mosque boards often disagree by a few minutes because they use different calculation methods, madhabs for Asr, coordinates, and rounding. Pick one trusted local source — then open your city on Namaz Buddy.

Prayer times differ because nobody shares one global clock. Each app or mosque timetable picks a calculation method (twilight angles for Fajr and Isha), a madhab for Asr, your coordinates, and sometimes rounding or seasonal tweaks. A gap of two to five minutes is normal; larger gaps usually mean different methods or the wrong city.
Namaz Buddy is not a fatwa service. We show city times using documented parameters (for example London Unified in the UK, ISNA angles common in North America, Kemenag rules in Indonesia). If your masjid board is the authority you follow, treat the board as primary and use the app to plan around it. Open prayer times and select London, New York, or your own city.
Four reasons the minutes do not match
- Calculation method — Fajr and Isha depend on sun altitude at twilight. ISNA, Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura, Egyptian, and other presets use different angles or fixed intervals after Maghrib.
- Asr madhab — Hanafi Asr is later (shadow length × 2) than Shafi‘i/Maliki/Hanbali (shadow × 1). Many Gulf and Indonesian boards follow Shafi‘i; Hanafi communities see a clear Asr split.
- Location — GPS pin, district, and timezone edge cases change sunrise and sunset. A screenshot from another city is misleading.
- Human timetable rules — Printed mosque tables may round to the nearest minute, add a safety minute before Iqamah, or follow a national body that adjusted the month manually.
Methods you will see in the wild
| Label (typical) | Where you see it | What moves |
|---|---|---|
| ISNA | Many North American apps and masjid PDFs | Fajr/Isha twilight angles (often 15° / 15° in summaries) |
| London Unified Prayer Timetable | UK mosques, community printouts | Seasonally tuned five-prayer table for London latitude |
| MWL / “Muslim World League” | Generic “international” app defaults | Common default angles; verify locally |
| Umm al-Qura | Saudi-linked calendars, some Gulf boards | Often fixed Isha interval after Maghrib in regional summaries |
Method names on app settings screens are not interchangeable labels — they are different astronomy presets. Compare like with like before you argue about “the app being wrong.”
Apps vs the mosque board
A mosque board is a community decision: which scholar committee, which print shop, whether Isha is pushed later in summer, whether Jumu‘ah Iqamah is fixed while Fajr stays astronomical. An app is a calculator plus UX. Both can be sincere; they solve different jobs.
Practical rule: pick the source you actually pray with. If the board at your door lists Maghrib 6:42 pm and your phone shows 6:39 pm, follow the board for iqamah and use the phone for reminders once you know the offset. Many regulars mentally add “+2 minutes” for their masjid — that is normal.
How Namaz Buddy handles your city
City pages use the method documented for that region in our codebase — for example London Unified for UK featured cities and Kemenag-style parameters for Indonesia — not a random world default. Still verify Ramadan, Eid, and Jumu‘ah with your mosque; we publish seasonal guides separately from daily salah clocks.

FAQ
Why is Asr the prayer that changes the most?
Because Hanafi and Shafi‘i Asr formulas use different shadow multipliers. Two apps both labeled “Islamic” can be using different madhabs without shouting it on the home screen. Check settings or the app’s method page.
Is a 3-minute difference a bug?
Usually not. Rounding, timezone, and method explain small gaps. If one app is 20+ minutes off for the same city and method, check that you selected the same location and daylight-saving rules.
Which source should I follow?
The local authority you trust for congregational prayer — often your mosque — then align notifications to that. This article does not replace that relationship.
